Using GLM in OpenCode: Choose the Right Provider and Diagnose Usage
The quick answer
When you connect GLM to OpenCode, choose Z.AI Coding Plan, then try one small request. It's worth doing this before you load a large repository: a valid API key can work while still pointing at the wrong billing arrangement.
Build your budget shortlistIn this guide
The GLM Coding Lite plan page keeps the listed subscription conditions and official references available while you check the integration.
If GLM seems to last longer in one client than another, check the setup before crediting the editor. The selected provider, model mapping and number of agent calls may have changed. Moving the conversation to a different app doesn't, by itself, give the subscription a larger allowance.
Connect through the documented provider
Z.ai's guide documents this sequence: run opencode auth login, choose Z.AI Coding Plan, enter the key, launch opencode, and use /models to select a model. The ordinary Z.AI provider is a separate choice in that login flow. Official OpenCode integration.
Keep the key in the tool's credential mechanism. Do not paste it into a repository file, public issue or screenshot intended for support. If your organization already provisions credentials, use that approved arrangement instead of creating a second unmanaged configuration.
Before changing anything, note the current provider and model so you can restore them. For an established installation, check its installed version and current help output rather than pasting an entire configuration from an old tutorial.
Check what the model label means
The current plan documents GLM-5.3 and GLM-5.3-Flash. Older requests for GLM-5.2 or GLM-5.1 route to GLM-5.3, while GLM-4.7 routes to GLM-5.3-Flash. An old configuration label therefore does not establish an independent older-model entitlement. Official model routing.
For a comparison, record the selected provider, requested model and any returned model identity your tool exposes. If the resolved identity is unavailable, say so. Do not label a trial as an exact model-to-model benchmark when you cannot establish what served it.
Verify the path with a deliberately small task
Open a disposable or clean test project. Ask the agent to explain one short function without editing files. Check that a response arrives, then inspect your subscription usage view and any billing information the account provides.
The purpose is to establish a clean baseline. A successful reply shows that some request worked; the selected provider and account observation help establish whether it followed the expected path. Dashboard updates may not be immediate, so one unchanged meter is not proof of free usage.
If you encounter an insufficient-balance error, check the supported tool, provider and base URL before adding funds. The FAQ identifies these as relevant conditions and documents the coding endpoint for tools in this category as https://api.z.ai/api/coding/paas/v4. Official troubleshooting FAQ.
Diagnose the workflow separately
Once connectivity is established, compare three increasingly demanding tasks:
| Task | Keep controlled | Inspect afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Explain one function | No edits or parallel workers | Provider, response and usage visibility |
| Fix one reproducible bug | Same failing test and repository state | Correctness, retries and allowance change |
| Review a bounded directory | Explicit scope and output format | Repeated reads, coverage and useful findings |
This progression helps distinguish a routing problem from an expensive task. It also avoids beginning with a repository-wide review whose cost is hard to explain.
For each run, save a short private note with elapsed time, usage before and after, and whether the result passed your acceptance condition. Exclude credentials, proprietary file contents and unnecessary conversation text from any report you share.
Give extra agents a reason to be there
Check how many workers the task started. Several agents reviewing overlapping files can make a small assignment surprisingly busy; give each one a distinct job before adding more.
Start a diagnostic with one worker, then add parallel tasks only when they have distinct responsibilities. For example, one worker could inspect tests while another reads the relevant implementation. Stop redundant workers that are searching the same files without producing a separate deliverable.
Z.ai describes concurrency as dynamically adjusted by tier and resource availability. A larger allowance should not be treated as a promise of unlimited simultaneous requests. Official usage policy.
Decide whether a tool change helped
Compare accepted fixes and your time spent reviewing them. A workflow that uses fewer credits but misses the bug is not automatically more economical. Likewise, one fast response does not establish dependable all-day performance.
Once the correct provider handles a small task successfully, keep that setup and move on to a real bug. If requests work but the quota still disappears quickly, inspect the task and its extra calls. If requests fail, collect the time and request identifier for support; another subscription upgrade won't explain the error.
