Claude Code vs Codex: usage tests, model trade-offs and which to buy

The author reports four times the cache-inclusive weekly capacity from $125 Opus 5.5 / CC versus $100 Sol 6.1 High. Combine this sample with model benchmarks and client updates to choose for coding or mixed work.

Start here: which work should this subscription pay for?

Buying one subscription mainly for coding? For the author’s reported workload, I would choose Claude Code with Opus 5.5: actual spending rises from $100 to $125/month while cache-inclusive weekly capacity is reported at roughly four times as much, or 3.2× relative capacity per dollar.

Also researching the web and producing spreadsheets, reports and content every day? I would keep ChatGPT as the main workspace first. Its value is how much tool switching and manual transfer it removes across that whole day, not just its coding score.

Model strengths, limits and a dated ranking

For agentic terminal work, Opus 5.5 High is the strongest of these three measured configurations. GPT-6.1 Sol High is the lower-cost compromise; GPT-6 Sol High trails its successor here. That is an editorial reading of these results, not a claim about every repository.

  • Opus: stronger measured terminal result; higher API benchmark cost. Its subscription may still be better value if the account completes more useful work before its cap.
  • Sol 6.1: lower measured API task cost and a stronger terminal result than Sol 6; it does not match Opus in the selected coding benchmark.
  • The model score belongs to the named model/configuration. Cursor, Claude Code and Codex add different tools and context handling; a product is not itself a row on this model ranking.

How to read this ranking

Rows are ordered by the Terminal-Bench 4.0 figures shown by Artificial Analysis on 12 October 2026. This is a three-model comparison, not a global ranking. Claude retains the source’s Default Fallback setting. High is a vendor-specific setting, not equal compute. The cost column is weighted across the AA Intelligence Index, not cost per successful coding task.

Author test: $100 Sol 6.1 High versus $125 Opus 5.5

In the account experience supplied by soloren lee on 12 October 2026, GPT-6.1 Sol High on a $100/month ChatGPT plan reaches approximately 800 million total tokens per week in ccusage, including cache. The reported Claude Code capacity with Opus 5.5 is about four times that volume, at an actual monthly outlay of $125.

That implies approximately 3.2 billion CC tokens/week and a 3.2× relative token-capacity-per-dollar ratio: 4 ÷ (125/100). The ratio compares the same weekly window against monthly fees; it does not treat a monthly fee as a weekly fee. For this reported coding workload, I would favor CC: 25% more spending for roughly four times the counted capacity.

  • Repeated cache reads count toward total tokens. Different cache ratios, task sizes and retry rates can change the relationship between total tokens and useful output. 3.2× here is not a productivity or quality multiplier.

Measurement scope and missing records

This is one author/account workload, not an official allowance. The $125 figure is the author’s actual spending, not a newly verified public plan price. The Claude effort, official tier, exact measured week and cache proportions remain unrecorded.

Beyond the author: why other quota reports differ

These three reports come from different public accounts with different tiers, effort and tasks. Numbers are unaudited and exact posting dates are unverified. They identify conditions to check; they cannot produce an average weekly token capacity.

What the new ChatGPT client adds to a $100 decision

Work can make the subscription useful beyond a coding session: connected sources, editable files and deliverables, and cross-device continuation reduce handoffs between tools. For this site’s owner, the relevant question is whether research, content and code can move through one review process.

That extra work is not free capacity: Work and Codex share usage. Dots are gradually rolling out, with Pro eligibility excluding the EEA, UK and Switzerland and other requirements. Do not price unavailable features into your purchase. $100 Pro also should not be sold as including the $500 Ultrafast entitlement.

  • 29 September: synchronized Work, Space and reusable Codex Cloud environments change how tasks and results move between devices. Local-tool steps still need an online connected computer.
  • Claude also expanded Cowork and editable artifacts. Compare your actual connectors and document workflow, rather than assuming only one vendor does office work.

A new reason to consider Max: API credits, with a separate purpose

The October update grants eligible Max 5x accounts $100 of monthly Claude Platform API credit and Max 20x accounts $200. You must spend seven days on an eligible plan and link a Console organization; unused credit does not roll over.

This materially improves value if you already run a separate API app or your own API-key agent. It does not pay for interactive Claude Code or extra subscription usage and does not increase those caps. Count only API spending it actually replaces; do not subtract its face value from the subscription as if it were cash back.

For readers using only interactive CC, this benefit does not extend the coding week. It matters when it replaces an API script or self-hosted agent bill you already pay.

Make the final choice for your working day

Already subscribed to ChatGPT? Look at what you actually used last month before cancelling. Almost entirely coding points toward CC; daily research, files, connectors and deliverables give ChatGPT value beyond coding capacity.

Add a second subscription for a specific bottleneck: repository tasks your main model repeatedly fails, or an editing workflow you need. Start with the lowest tier that meets that need before upgrading.

  • Pure coding: completion quality and usable capacity decide; the selected Opus benchmark result gives CC a reason to be tested first.
  • Mixed professional work: include research, files, connectors and review effort in the decision; shared usage and feature availability can reverse the result.
  • Cursor: buy it when the editing and multi-model workflow earns its separate fee. An API-equivalent token estimate alone cannot value an editor.

Public user reports: who claimed what

The research corpus contains 59 distinct public accounts from Cursor Community Forum and Reddit. This page uses 34 accounts discussing these products. Collected 2026-10-12.

Counts deduplicate accounts within each product and describe historical claims. An account can report insufficient frontier-model capacity and sufficient first-party capacity. Labels overlap; silence is not satisfaction.

Sampling method and limits

Selection used relevant queries and readable discussions, not random sampling. Ten of 24 forum records come from one metering-dispute topic. The 35 Reddit records lack verified absolute dates and cannot define a fixed time-window sample. Accounts are not verified people; attached images, reconstructed usage and quality judgments remain unaudited self-reports.

Records saying only Claude without identifying Claude Code are excluded from the Claude Code column. Model names do not normalize effort, tool, plan or quota units.
