If you already subscribe to Claude Pro or Max, start with official Claude Code before buying another coding plan. Choose OpenCode when you need to switch model providers, run local models, or use model access you pay for separately. OpenCode Go is an optional subscription for that client; buying it does not transfer your Claude subscription.

The application you use and the account paying for its model calls are separate choices. Check both before comparing monthly fees.

Start with the access you already have

A Pro or Max subscription covers official Claude Code, including supported IDE use. Its usage limits are shared with Claude, so moving from the web app to the terminal does not create a separate allowance. Claude subscription guidance

OpenCode supports multiple providers and local models. You can connect a provider's API key, use optional OpenCode Console credits, or subscribe to Go. You do not need Go to use the OpenCode application. OpenCode providers

For a monthly model bundle, Go is listed at USD 10/month and Go Plus at USD 40/month. Both still require an OpenCode API key. Their model-specific allowances have five-hour, weekly and monthly constraints. Read the limits for the model you intend to use rather than treating the subscription as one universal token balance. Compare what you would pay for

Route Payment What it covers What to check
Claude Pro USD 20 billed monthly, before applicable tax Official Claude Code and Claude app access, with shared limits Whether those limits fit your terminal workload
Claude Max A separate subscription tier; check its current quote Official Claude Code and Claude app access under that tier's terms The selected Max tier and its allowance
OpenCode Go / Go Plus USD 10 / USD 40 per month Optional model access within the Go product Model-specific limits and regional availability
OpenCode with an API provider or Console credits Separately metered model usage Calls billed to the connected provider or Console account Model rates and your spending controls

The Claude Pro price comes from Claude's pricing page. It is a monthly-billed reference price, not a Max quote or a verified local checkout total.

OpenCode's older Zen documentation now leads to the Console model catalogue, which offers pay-as-you-go access. Console credits and Go subscriptions have different billing arrangements. Check which provider you connected rather than relying on an older product name.

Check Claude authentication before comparing costs

Official Claude Code can use Claude account authentication or an API key. If ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set, it takes precedence over subscription authentication and sends usage to API billing. Verify the authentication mode without exposing the key. Claude's authentication warning

A Claude model in another client's catalogue does not establish access through your Pro or Max subscription. Anthropic restricts third-party applications from offering Claude.ai login or routing requests through users' subscription credentials. Its policy separately permits users to sign in to the unmodified official Claude Code binary on a hosting platform under the stated conditions. Anthropic's credential-use policy

OpenCode's provider page contains an older Pro/Max login sentence alongside a warning that subscription plugins are prohibited and were removed from the bundled application as of version 1.3.0. Do not base a purchase on that older login instruction. Confirm the supported API or provider route for your installed version. OpenCode's Anthropic section

Confirm the model and connection

In OpenCode, use /connect to configure the provider and /models to select an available model. Check the specific tier's model list, regional conditions and consumption rates before paying. For a GLM connection, the OpenCode provider and usage guide covers that narrower setup.

If you are also considering an editor-based workflow, the Cursor vs Claude Code comparison addresses that choice separately.

Try one bounded task before adding another subscription

Give yourself a trial window, such as two hours, and choose a refactoring task in a repository you know. Define the checks the result must pass before starting. This is a suggested evaluation, not a benchmark we have run.

Record the authentication mode, provider and exact model alongside any extra charge. Include the time you spend reviewing or repairing the result. A task that finishes quickly but needs extensive correction may be a poor fit for your workflow.

Keep using an existing Claude subscription if it handles that work within acceptable limits. Consider OpenCode when provider choice or local models solve a need your current setup does not. Compare the options in the Coding Plans provider directory, then verify the selected offer with its provider before buying.
